Food sustains us, but it can also take our lives. Let's talk about the ways this can happen. First, we can start with the least deadly way, which is choking. According to the National Safety Council, 5,000 Americans choke to death each year. Next up let's consider diseases linked to one’s diet such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. This one kills way more than choking. Unhealthy eating contributes to 678,000 deaths in the US each year. Lastly, there is a silent killer. Silent because it is hidden in nearly all the food we eat. Chemicals used in the food industry are deadly. Many of the compounds used to color, flavor and preserve the very food which sustains us are unsafe.
